Made for God

Made for God

There are a few writers whose style of writing and thinking always speak to me more clearly than others. Perhaps you find the same thing. For me, CS Lewis is one of perhaps a half dozen such authors.

Here's a quote I rediscovered recently. It's from one of his most notable works of non-fiction; 'Mere Christianity'.

"God made us: invented us as a man invents an engine. A car is made to run on petrol, and it would not run properly on anything else. Now God designed the human machine to run on Himself. He Himself is the fuel our spirits were designed to burn, or the food our spirits were designed to feed on. There is no other. That is why it is just no good asking God to make us happy in our own way without bothering about religion. God cannot give us a happiness and peace apart from Himself, because it is not there."

Separated by more than fifteen centuries it resonates with one of St. Augustine's most quoted sayings, written as part of a prayer to God:

'You have made us for yourself and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in you.'

Read both of these quotes through a few times.

What do they say to you?

Are you seeking to find happiness and peace in God or someplace else?

Where are you looking for rest?

Before I became a Christian 23 years ago now, I looked in all sorts of places but from that time onwards I found and have continued to find Jesus' promise always rings true:

'Come to me all you who are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest.' (Matthew 11:28)

May peace be with you all,
